Preschool Door Decorating Ideas

The first thing a child is likely to see when entering his or her preschool classroom is the door. Using bright, eye-catching decorations is an effective way to create a positive atmosphere and set the tone for the day. Preschool door decorations can be fun and educational at the same time. You can create a visually appealing door for a classroom by using some simple art supplies and a little creativity.
  1. Beginning of the Year Decorations

    • You can begin creating a sense of community within your classroom by posting student names and pictures on the door at the beginning of the school year. Kids love to see their names and faces on display. In order to do this, first cover your door in a bright color--light green, for example. Cut out letters (or use pre-cut ones) to spell across the top section of the door, "A Beautiful Bunch." Take pictures of your students the first few days of school; the print outs of the pictures should be small (about one inch square). Trim the pictures to make them round. Cut out flower petal shapes from different colors of construction paper, arrange them to make flowers and glue them underneath the title on the door. Use one flower for each child. Glue each child's picture in the middle of one flower. Cut out long, green stems and attach them underneath the flowers. Have the stems pointing toward a common point at the bottom section of the door. Your creation should look like a bouquet with your students' face in the center of the flowers. You can opt to write each child's name on a petal next to his or her face as well.

    Holiday Displays

    • Holidays lend themselves to great door decoration ideas. For Christmas, you could use red paper as the background for your door. Post the words, "Santa's Little Helpers" at the top in green letters. Have the students color pictures of elves and write their names on them. Cut out the elves and glue them all around the door underneath the title. You also can add holly leaves, stockings, candy canes, etc. for extra decorations on the door.

    Unit Themes

    • You can incorporate the theme of a unit you're teaching into your door decorations. A good example is a beach unit done at the end of the year. You can use blue paper to look like ocean water as your door's background. Attach the title, "Swimming Into Kindergarten." Cut out fish and let the children color them and write their names on them. Glue the fish all over the door under the title. Attach other ocean themed items on the display, you could also use other ocean animals, seaweed, a treasure chest and a sunken ship.
