Angel & Tree Craft Ideas for Preschool

For many preschool children, Christmas is one of the most-looked-forward to times of the year; between Santa Claus, gift giving and the many other traditions and activities associated with the holiday, it's no wonder why. Two symbols that are often associated with the Christmas season are trees and angels. During this time of the year, engage children in making tree and angel crafts to teach them about these two symbols.
  1. Hand- and Footprint Angel

    • Create angles from children's hand- and footprints. Instruct children to press a bare foot in pink or blue finger paint and then press it onto a piece of paper; this will be the body of the angel. Have them press both of their hands into white finger paint and then press the handprints on either side of the footprint, creating wings for the angel. Instruct them to paint a circle on top of the heel of the footprint, making a face for the angel. With gold paint, they can make a halo on top of the head.

    Heart Angels

    • Use this craft to not only teach about Christmas angels, but to also reinforce the heart shape. Provide children with a large and a small heart-shaped cookie cutter. Instruct children to trace one large heart on any color construction paper they'd like; this will be used as the body of the angel. Have them trace the small cookie cutter two times on white construction paper. Instruct students to cut out the heart shapes, turn the large heat upside down and glue the smaller hearts to either side of it, creating wings for the angel. For a head, children can trace a circle stencil on yellow construction paper, cut it out and glue it to the point of the large heart. Allow students to use markers to embellish their heart angels.

    Craft Stick Tree

    • Fashion Christmas trees out of craft sticks. Provide children with three craft sticks and have them paint the sticks green. One the paint has dried, assemble the sticks into the formation of a triangle and glue them together. Cut a small square from brown craft foam and glue it to the bottom of the triangle, creating the trunk of the tree. Offer children glitter glue and stickers to decorate their trees with and have them top their craft with a star-shape sticker. Tie a piece of yarn into a loop and glue it to the top of the triangle, which can be used to display the craft on an actual Christmas tree.

    Foam Trees

    • Craft foam cones serve as the basis of this Christmas tree craft. Provide children with craft foam cones and have them paint the cones green. Once the paint dries, offer students sequins and craft pompoms, which they can glue onto the cones as decorations. Draw a star on a piece of card stock; one for each child. Have children color the stars gold, cut them out and glue them to a toothpick. Turn the foam cones upside down and insert the toothpicks into the top of them, creating a star on the top of the tree.
