Use cereal to make a honeycomb. To begin, show pictures of a honeycomb to give students something to reference as they work. Give each student a round piece of white card stock and yellow paint. Ask each student to paint the circle yellow. When the paint is dry, give each student a cup of O-shaped cereal and glue. Avoid cereals in different colors; instead, choose cereal in a neutral white or yellow. Show students how to glue the cereal close together to make a honeycomb.
Use a craft to explain how bees pollinate flowers. Give students a piece of white paper and paint, markers and crayons. Invite students to create a flower garden on their paper. Once the paper is dry, give students yellow pom-poms and glue. Encourage students to glue the yellow pom-pom bees on their paper. Give students markers to draw wings, stingers and antennae around the pom-poms. Explain how bees spread pollen from flower to flower.
Help students make flying bee puppets. Give each student a small Styrofoam ball and brown, yellow and black paint. The Styrofoam ball is the bee's body; let students paint stripes or designs on their bee. Next, place glue on the tip of a tongue depressor and cut a small slit in the Styrofoam ball; place the tongue depressor inside the slit. As the ball dries, give students two wings cut from white card stock, as well as paint. Let students paint the wings. Once the wings are dry, glue them to the sides of the ball. Finally, cut pipe cleaners in half and help students stick two pipe cleaners into the ball as antennae, and a third in the back for a stinger.
Make honeybees out of toilet paper rolls. Give each child a clean toilet paper roll and yellow paint. Help students paint the tube yellow. When the paint is dry, use paint or markers to create black stripes on the bottom half of the roll. On the top yellow half, help students create a bee face using markers and wiggly eyes. Next, cut wings from card stock and let students decorate. Finally, help students glue the wings to the side of the toilet paper roll.
