Preschool Ideas for Rainbow Fish

"The Rainbow Fish" is a picture book written by Marcus Pfister. The book tells the story of a fish with many colorful scales who does not want to share. He later learns that is better to share his scales and have friends to play with than to be selfish and lonely. Reading this book to your preschoolers can facilitate arts and crafts lessons, as well as lessons on sharing and friendship.
  1. Friendship Chain

    • Discuss friendship with your preschoolers, asking them what friendship means to them. Cut out strips of white construction paper and give one to each student. Give the students crayons and have them decorate their strips any way that they want. Tell the students to write their names on the strips. Explain to your students that you are going to create a friendship chain. Staple the first strip so that it is a ring. Link the next strip to the first and staple. Continue this until you have one long chain to display in your classroom.

    Collage Fish

    • Give each student a cutout of a fish. Place various colorful materials on one table. Materials can include sequins, small pieces of tissue paper, small pieces of aluminum foil and pompoms. Give your student small empty bowls and allow them to fill up the bowls with the materials that they choose. Students will use glue sticks to decorate their fish with the various materials. Hang the fish up around the classroom and discuss how each fish is beautiful even though they were all done differently.

    Pictures on Sharing

    • Discuss sharing with your students. Ask them to think about times in their lives when they have shared something special with a friend or family member. Give each child a blank sheet of paper. Tell your students to draw pictures of times when they have shared. When the students are done, have them show their pictures to their classmates and discuss the pictures.

    Community Fish

    • Draw a fish on a large poster board. Give each student a circular piece of paper. Explain that those are going to be the scales for the fish. Discuss how your classroom is a community and how you all work together. Have the student decorate their scales and then glue them to the fish on the poster board. Display the poster in the classroom to show the students how each of their drawings came together to create one large piece of art.
