After you've received the Your Baby Can Read system, start with watching the Workshop DVD. This will serve to motivate you to complete the project.
The DVD viewing program is about 7 months. First, you will have to find 2 appropriate times during the day for your baby to view the DVD. This will be highly individual to your child and you routine.
Reduce the amount of TV viewing your child does. Preferably, the child should only watch Your Baby Can Read DVDs 2 times a day, and nothing else on television. If there is another program that you child watches, make sure it is not an overstimulating program (ie Spongebob Squarepants, Wow Wow Wubzy, etc.)
Watch the video with your baby each time he watches it. The maker of the program says that this is not required, but I believe that the child needs to hear a live voice repeat the words, and see you lead in interacting with the DVD. Continue to watch the DVD with your child until s/he can sit through a part of it alone and interacts with the music and voices on the DVD.
At least two times a day, show your child a set of 5 or so words from the word cards included in the system. Show the child a word, say "This word says _____!" and point to the word on the card from left to right.
Periodically (maybe once or twice a week) test your child to see if s/he is making progress and recognizing words. Place two flashcards on the floor in front of the baby, and ask the to pick the card that says one of the two words. If/when your child is consistently picking the right card, or showing recognition by vocalizing the word, pointing, or gesturing, you can be confident the child has learned the word. The first 50 or so words take a long time, but after that the child will pick up words more quickly and will be on his way to reading fluently in no time!
