How to Read a Schematic

Schematics are drawings that show the parts of a system and how they work, such as a computer mother board or the wiring in a home. Schematics use a series of simple symbols and lines to represent how these systems and symbols interact. Reading a schematic is necessary for building and construction jobs, as well as engineering and architect projects. Learning to read a schematic requires understanding the basic system represented by the schematic.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the list of symbols at the side of each schematic. Understand what each symbol represents, such as a specific electrical station or switch. Consult the symbol key when necessary.

    • 2

Check the schematic for warnings or notes, such as using a specific type of wire in an electrical design. Take heed of these warnings before reading through the schematic.

    • 3

Scan the entire schematic to get a basic understanding of the overall design of the system. Note the specific and important components of the design, such as motors or transformers.

    • 4

Locate the specific important components of the system and understand their use. Use a system guidebook to understand them, if necessary.

    • 5

Find the starting component in the schematic, such as a switch and follow the wires to find out how it influences each of the components it interacts with. Follow the other components' wires outwards to the other components to understand the system fully.
