How to Accelerate Your Child to the Next Grade

Think carefully before deciding to accelerate your child to the next grade level. While he may be academically ready, it's important that he is also mentally and socially ready to skip a grade. Speak to school officials and follow a few other key steps to ensure that you're making the right move.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess your child's ability. Review test scores, report cards and teacher comments or assessments. It is important that your child show a firm grasp of all of the material that is being taught at his current grade level. Advanced grades will build on the foundation of the lessons taught in lower grades. If your child does not have a concrete understanding of the basics, he will likely not be successful in an accelerated grade.

    • 2

Talk to your child to confirm that he wants to skip a grade level. Discuss the ways in which his environment will change; and ask if he is willing to put in additional time to complete the extra school work that will be involved.

    • 3

Meet with your child's current teacher. The teacher will help you to determine whether your child has the necessary skills to be successful in the advanced grade.

    • 4

Submit your request in writing. Compose a letter to the principal stating your belief that your child is ready to be accelerated to the next grade. The principal will likely contact you regarding your request and set up the required meetings with teachers and counselors. Follow up with a phone call if you do not get a timely response.

    • 5

Meet with the guidance counselor for advice on the process of grade acceleration. She will inform you of testing or evaluations that your child may have to complete in order to skip a grade, as well as additional meetings that you may have to attend.

    • 6

Prepare your child for testing, should your school require it. Most schools will require that a student be tested in all subjects, including math, reading, science and social studies. The testing will show whether your child understands all of the concepts being taught in his current grade and how he is likely to fare in an advanced grade.

    • 7

Fill out the required paperwork. The documentation varies between districts but your school's principal or guidance counselor will be able to advise you of the paperwork to be completed and submitted.
