Have the child collect a variety of nuts to demonstrate how a squirrel gathers food for the winter. Once collected, the preschool student can display the nuts by grouping like types together. Help the child label each type.
Assist the child in building a squirrel feeder by obtaining a dried ear of corn. Help the youngster tie a string around the smallest section of the cob. Tie the other end to a tree branch. Watch as the squirrels scurry to nibble at the corn cob. Take pictures to place on a poster board.
Copy several different pictures of a squirrel for the child to color. Have the child color one picture red, one gray, one brown, one white and one blue. Place each picture on or near a small tree branch or on a picture of a tree. Have the child discuss which squirrel pictures are more easily seen and how the color of a squirrel protects it.
