Preschool Science Projects on Squirrels

Nature has many wonderful concepts for young children to explore. By examining the life of squirrels, preschool children can learn about adaption, means of protection and hibernation. There are several easy lessons and science projects that preschool children can carry out to demonstrate the concepts that they have learned.
  1. Nut Collection

    • Have the child collect a variety of nuts to demonstrate how a squirrel gathers food for the winter. Once collected, the preschool student can display the nuts by grouping like types together. Help the child label each type.

    Squirrel Feeder

    • Assist the child in building a squirrel feeder by obtaining a dried ear of corn. Help the youngster tie a string around the smallest section of the cob. Tie the other end to a tree branch. Watch as the squirrels scurry to nibble at the corn cob. Take pictures to place on a poster board.

    Squirrel Camoflauge

    • Copy several different pictures of a squirrel for the child to color. Have the child color one picture red, one gray, one brown, one white and one blue. Place each picture on or near a small tree branch or on a picture of a tree. Have the child discuss which squirrel pictures are more easily seen and how the color of a squirrel protects it.
