Craft Ideas for Children and Grandparents Together

Craft time means bonding time for grandparents and their grandkids. It allows grandparents to share their creative or artistic know-how with their grandchildren. In turn, the children learn valuable lessons not only in arts and crafts but more importantly, life lessons gained from the special moments spent together. There are a multitude of crafts for every occasion and grandparents and children can work on them together to while away time on a rainy day, idle summer afternoons or weekends together.
  1. Valentine's Day

    • Build Valentine's gift or memento boxes using shoe boxes. Decorate them with paper hearts, cupid cutouts, beads and ribbons. Have the kids write love letters to their parents, place them inside the box and present it to them on Valentine's Day. Parents will surely appreciate this wonderful, heartwarming surprise.

    Earth Day

    • Assemble a butterfly mobile using construction paper, twigs and thread. Make a papier-mache globe with a balloon, newspaper and flour. Or create an amazing ocean diorama by printing out pictures of sharks and whales then coloring, cutting and hanging them in a decorated box. For more detailed steps, enchantedlearning.com has several Earth Day crafts and projects to choose from and enjoy. This is a fun and creative way for grandparents to teach children about the various creatures of the earth and the importance of taking care of them.

    Christmastime

    • Craft little snowmen using styrofoam, felt papers (2 pieces shaped into a snowman, cut, sewn together and stuffed with batting), beads (eyes and buttons) and twigs (nose). Teach kids how to make origami stars using all kinds of scrap paper they could find in the house. Or use discarded wine corks to fashion little angels, Santa Claus or a nativity scene. These will keep grandparents and grandchildren occupied on cold, snowy afternoons and provide great bonding time.
