Preschool: Parts of an Apple

Apples are the most popular fruit in America. Apples are used in baking, cooking and for eating. There are several parts to an apple: the skin, the stem, the flesh and the core. Apples are known for their sweet flavor; however, some apples such as Granny Smiths are sour and used in the production of pies. Having information on the parts of an apple will help you understand the fruit in greater detail.
  1. Skin

    • The most noticeable part of an apple is its skin. Apple skin is smooth and almost waxy in texture. The skin of an apple protects the rest of the fruit and keeps the inside juicy. The skin also keeps the elements such as rain and wind from altering the feel and taste of the fruit. Apple skin ranges in color from bright green to deep red. Some apple come in pink colors and even mixed colors of red, pink and green.

    Stem

    • The stem of the apple is situated at the very top of the fruit. The stem cannot be eaten. After the apple is picked from the tree, the stem does not serve a purpose to the apple; however, while the apple is growing on the tree, the stem helps carry nutrients from the tree to the apple so that it can become the tasty, healthy fruit that it is.

    Flesh

    • The flesh of the apple takes up the largest part of the fruit. The flesh of the apple contains the juice and the edible portion of the fruit, excluding the skin. The flesh of the apple is used to make apple juice, apple pie, baked apples and applesauce.

    Core

    • The apple core is located at the very center of the apple and is protected by the flesh and the skin of the apple. The apple core is inedible and contains seeds. Apple seeds should not be eaten. When apple seeds pass through the stomach, the seeds can turn into a dangerous poison.
