Barney Educational Games

The purple dinosaur known as Barney has been enriching children’s lives since 1992 when the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) first aired "Barney and Friends." Since then, Barney has become a household name. The Barney franchise has increased to include stuffed toys, movies and educational games. The games are geared toward pre-k children to help prepare them for school.
  1. Board Game

    • Milton Bradley offers a Barney Memory game. The game can be found on the Toys R Us website and other online retail venues. The Barney Memory game comes with paired cards, a card tray and instructions in English and Spanish. The object of the game is to turn the cards over so you cannot see the pictures. Each player takes his turn flipping over a card and looking for its match. If you do not find a pair, then you flip the cards back over. This game builds observation and memory skills for your child.

    Computer Game

    • Nova Development US offers a DVD-ROM game for Windows Vista and XP called Barney--Secret of the Rainbow. The game runs around $19 on Amazon, as of August 2010. The object of the game is to save the colors of the rainbow and bring happiness back to the enchanted land. Your child learns to manipulate a mouse by pointing and clinking to play the game. The game promotes creativity, problem-solving and memory skills. Barney--Secret of the Rainbow also offers entertainment by having characters that dance to music.

    Online Games

    • There are many websites that offer free Barney games. PBSKids.com is one. On this website, your child can play a plethora of games that teach about shapes and counting. The website also offers an exercise program with Barney. Some of the games require a download of Shockwave Player 11.5 to play. Sprout.com is another website that offers free Barney games. Along with more shape-learning games, your child can use her creativity by making a short movie with the Barney characters. She can also learn to count by helping Barney play a musical instrument. One other website where your child can find free games is Barney.com. On this site your child can use his creativity coloring Barney pages. This website also offers Barney Jungle Friends games where your child can catch a monkey, match animal sounds to the correct animal and make animals dance. The Every Animal Talks and Jungle Friends Music Jam require a speaker to play the game.
