Create a "Home Fire Prevention Checklist" for your home. Include things that need to be checked, such as fire alarms, and things that need to be left alone, like matches or lighters. Also, add the location of a fire extinguisher in your home.
Print out fire safety coloring pages from some of the websites listed in the "Resources" section. As your children is coloring her pages, talk to her about the importance of staying away from matches, lighters, and flammable substances.
Read fire safety and prevention books to your child. Most libraries carry a number of books related to fire safety.
Draw floor plans of your home. Encourage your child to mark the location of his bedroom on the floor plan, and talk about what he should do in order to escape in the event of a fire in your home.
Teach the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique. Your child will love this engaging lesson as it allows her to be active and participate in a fire-safety scenario.
Teach your child to dial 911 in the event of an emergency situation, like a fire. Explain that this should be done after he has left the scene and is safe at a neighbor's house.
