Preschool Numbers Learning Activities

The preschool phase is a very important time in a child's education. Preschool helps the child learn the elemental building blocks of math and become familiar with numbers on a basic level. You can use a variety of learning activities that teach preschoolers about numbers and how to use them.
  1. Numbers Hide and Seek

    • Get a set of index cards and write a single-digit number on each of them and some corresponding dots to help the preschoolers figure out the number. You might even cut the index cards into the shape of different kinds of animals. Talk about the number cards with the children and help them identify each one. Then, tell the children to close their eyes and hide the numbers around the room or in a garden. Tell the children they can now open their eyes and they need to find the numbers. When they find them all, have them arrange the cards in order.

    Connect-the-Dots

    • Draw a connect-the-dots outline of the preschooler's name on a large piece of paper. Number the dots in order, starting with the number one. Let the child pick out a crayon and then help him connect each of the dots, counting all the way. You can try doing this with animals or objects as well. Try going in reverse to teach the child how to count backwards.

    Beanbag Throw

    • Divide a cardboard box into nine squares with pieces of cardboard. Use a marker to draw a number in each spot on the box, numbering them one through nine. Put a bucket of beanbags near the box. Call out a number, and give each preschooler a turn to try to throw a beanbag into the square with the number.

    Color-by-Number

    • Print out some color-by-number activities which can be found at activitypad.com. Give your preschooler a box of crayons and one of the activity sheets. Ask her to identify the first color and find the right crayon. Tell her to color in all of the areas on the picture with the number one on it. Repeat this for the other colors.
