Preschool PE Activities

Young children need physical education as much as traditional instruction. Preschoolers have a lot of excess energy, so providing time for physical activity in their daily routines can burn off this energy and help promote a healthy lifestyle. Teach your preschoolers to be physically fit with these fun and recreational activities.
  1. Hula Hoops

    • Give your preschoolers some time with hula hoops to develop their coordination and let them get some exercise. Teach them how to spin the hoop around their waist, arms and legs, then show them how they can practice hopping in and out of them.

You can also use hula hoops as targets for throwing. Hang one up and have children practice throwing bean bags or balls through it, or lay it on the ground and have them toss the bean bag inside of it.

    Obstacle Course

    • You can set up an obstacle course with items you already have in your backyard or playground. Arrange equipment, such as hula hoops, slides, cones and balls around the yard. Instruct children how to complete the course, and lead them through it the first time or so until they get the hang of it. Have children practice different skills and stations throughout the course, such as crawling through a tube and stopping to jump rope 10 times. You can use the same equipment in a variety of ways for a different course every time you complete this activity.

    Little Yogis

    • For a quieter activity, teach your preschoolers some basic yoga poses. You can even give them child-like names (like "dalmatian dog" instead of "downward-facing dog") to help them remember the moves. Simply arrange mats or towels on the floor of your home or classroom, and lead the kids through some stretches and poses. You can even play relaxing music in the background. This can be a calming way to start or end the day, or a good cool-down activity after rigorous exercise or before nap time.
