Teaching Colors to Preschoolers

During their preschool years, children learn and develop the skills needed to succeed in kindergarten. This includes learning the alphabet, numbers and colors. Many children become confused about colors and may express frustration when trying to remember the name of each color. Fortunately, you can implement teaching colors into your class time in ways that are both fun and educational for your students. The more your students enjoy learning, the easier they may find it to remember their colors.

Instructions

Draw with crayons. Crayons come in a variety of colors and are small and easy for preschool children to use. Unlike markers or pens, crayons are unlikely to stain clothing during regular use. Ask each child to state the color of his crayon and discuss what color crayons other students are using. You may also use crayons to teach about different shades of the same color since crayons frequently come in a variety of shades.

Eat colorful snacks in class. Choose brightly colored snacks or create your own snack as a class. Choose the color ahead of time and brainstorm with your students as to what types of foods your class can eat. For example, if your theme is the color yellow, students can eat yellow cake, bananas, lemonade and yellow crackers. Allow the students to participate in selecting the foods to get the children thinking about the color of foods they enjoy on a daily basis.

    • 3

Make color-specific art projects. Choose an art project for each class period that uses one specific color. For example, one day your class can complete a variety of crafts that are all red. Children can glue red hearts, paint red circles and cut out red apples. Another day your students can do blue, green or yellow projects.

Play matching games in class. Create a set of colored cards or shapes and ask students to match each card to its pair. When a student matches a set of same-colored cards, say the name of the color together several times so the child will remember it.
