Tips on Teaching Music to Preschoolers

Most children love to sing and dance, so it comes as no surprise that music is one of the most important elements of elementary education. As a preschool teacher, you have the task of showing your students why music is important, as well as teaching them basic songs and instrumental styles. While your preschool students aren't ready for complicated stanzas or counting notes, they're old enough to understand and sing along to new music.
  1. Songs

    • Choose songs for your classroom that your preschool students can learn from. Hold a special "song and dance" time each morning where you play a CD of popular children's music. Let the students dance around as they enjoy the sound of the songs. If you want to add variety, you can play a CD of animal noises and let your students "sing" along with their animal voices.

    Instruments

    • While it's important to talk with your preschool students about different instruments, realize that they aren't ready to learn to play complicated music yet. You can talk with your students and show them pictures of pianos, violins and bass guitars, but stick with simple instruments to use in class. Let your students play on homemade drums or make maracas in class to play with. Remind your students that one of the simplest instruments they can use to make music is their hands.

    Singing

    • In addition to traditional nursery rhymes and recorded music, you can also sing songs about washing your hands, picking up toys and the importance of brushing teeth. Don't be afraid to make up your own songs as you teach, as you may find that these homemade songs quickly become your students' favorites. Sing songs as your students perform different activities to help them learn the words and make mundane tasks, such as putting away crayons, exciting.

    Practice

    • If your students struggle to remember the name of an instrument or aren't sure how to pronounce certain song lyrics, practice saying the words with them. Sometimes even the best students can struggle to remember a word, so avoid getting agitated with your students and instead offer to help them repeat the word. With continuing practice, your students will quickly learn the words to all of their favorite songs.
