The wonderful part about using butterflies in your lesson is that you can create a great display once the butterflies are completed. To prepare for this activity, copy a coloring sheet of a butterfly. You should make a class set and a few extra just in case. Depending on the ability of the students, you may want to pre-cut the butterfly sheets.
Use ice cream pop sticks to determine which colors students will be assigned. Write the name of the color in English on one side of the pop stick, and in French on the other side. Have your students sit in groups, preferably at a table. Let the students select a stick from the cup and color their butterfly whatever color is written on the stick they pick.
Rainbows are great for teaching colors. You will need construction paper, scissors and glue sticks. Cut sheets of construction paper into semi-circle strips. Each semi-circle strip should be about one-quarter inch. On each strip write the name of the color in French. Decide if students will use a black, white or blue background. Have each student create a rainbow by gluing the semi-circle strips into the shape of a rainbow onto a sheet of construction paper. Students should identify the color each time in French as they make the rainbows.
