DVDs That Help Toddlers Learn to Read

Literacy skills start developing at an early age. Although toddlers cannot be taught to read in same way that an older child would be, a foundation can be established for literacy skills in this developmental period. Parents can foster reading abilities in their toddlers through educational DVDs that teach basic literacy skills.
  1. Types of DVDs

    • There are a variety of commercially available DVDs that can help toddlers to develop early literacy skills. DVDs can be found in stores and online from the manufacturers as well as media and educational entertainment sites. These DVDs typically come in a package with other materials, such as books, a resource guide for parents and CDs. The entire system is meant to be used together to reinforce early reading practices.

Benefits of Reading DVDs for Toddlers

    • Some child development experts and professionals believe that early reading DVDs can enhance a young child's growing literacy skills. According to the child development organization Zero to Three, language and literacy development begins in a child's first three years of life and is linked with books and stories to which the child is exposed. DVDs can help this development and provide a base for later reading abilities.

    Considerations

    • Not all learning DVDs for toddlers are of good quality. With modern media and computer technology, almost anyone can manufacture and sell an "educational" DVD online. Before choosing an early reading system for your toddler, research the company that sells the product and its author. Check if there is a real expert source behind the research and methods used. Although it is easy to claim to be an expert, a true child development/early literacy expert should be a professional with at least a master's or, preferably, a PhD level of education. Additionally, experts in this field should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of toddler literacy development and have a proven research track record. DVDs claiming a quick process or that your child will easily be able to read are not realistic. Look for parent references or case stories of real toddlers and families who have used the DVD program with success.

    Using DVDs With Toddlers

    • Before starting a DVD program, parents should realize that toddlers are at a beginning cusp in terms of early literacy skills. There should be no expectations for reading on grade school level or learning overnight. Instead, parents can use reading DVDs as an entertaining and educational supplement to any at-home learning. Remember that a young child has a short attention span. Follow the instructions or parent's guide that comes with the DVD, keeping your toddler's ability to sit and pay attention in mind. If your child demonstrates behaviors consistent with being distracted or unhappy, such as running away, having a tantrum or avoiding the DVD, put the DVD away and try again later. Don't force your child to watch; this would make the process less enjoyable and may even decrease any positive effects.
