Some DVDs are made with the intent for use with children less than 5 years old. "Your Baby Can Read," for example, uses visuals to display a word and then the audio narrates the sound of the word, followed by a demonstration of the meaning of the word; with the word "clap," the word will display, then a narrator reads the word aloud and finally footage of someone clapping is displayed. "Intellectual Baby" also sells DVD kits for boys and girls under 5, introducing simple words such as those for shapes and colors.
Some DVDs are designed for post-beginner level, introducing words with more advanced concepts. "Meet the Sight Words" DVDs deal with words that do not easily follow phonetic "rules." "Read-TV" contains six stories told with captions. The visuals with the words displayed on the screen give kids hints to help them understand the meaning of a word, such as stripes going through the word "stripes" or the word "run" running across the screen. Along with visuals, the narrator says the word along with the caption, before the word is displayed without narration.
At intermediate levels of reading, kids often enjoy learning to read along with more complex stories. Scholastic offers DVD versions of many high-quality kids' stories. With storytelling that is enjoyable for children, subtitles display the words to allow kids to read along with the narration. Leap Frog produces DVDs to help reading ability at a number of levels. The DVDs use stories involving spelling and reading as part of the adventures. "Word Caper," for example, tells the journey of Leap, Lily and Tad seeking to return the voice of Mr. Websley after being silenced by the "Silent E Machine." "Word Caper" includes humorous songs and teaches advanced word-building. "Letter Factory" features the same characters building words from J's and K's.
Some DVDs prepare kids for more advanced words and concepts of language. Emma's Extravagant Adventure uses a storybook format and includes advanced words such as "frigid" and "serendipity." Discovery School also offers DVDs that cover advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension (Discovery School produces reading DVDs at many other levels, also).
