Make a family band at music time. Use anything on hand for instruments and back up your favorite song on the radio. Teaching rhythm and sound to your kids furthers the ability to cooperate, listen and work as team. Or if you prefer, turn the radio on full blast and have a dance competition. Sing along to a hairbrush microphone for your "Family Idol Contest." Encourage your kids in your comments. Teach them to encourage those around them.
Spending time together for a family board game night is another way to bond. Playing board games, and setting a good example, can help your children learn patience and good sportsmanship. The conflicts that will inevitably arise from family competition should be viewed as learning opportunities. For instance, if little Billy feels sore about losing, encourage him to remember the fun he had playing.
Borrow a book of plants and animals that are indigenous to your area from the library. Involve your child in packing a picnic to take on a nature scavenger hunt. Devise a points system, where each item in the book found gives the finder a certain number of points. The picnic packing will teach your kids preparation. The scavenger hunt will teach your kids honesty and respect for nature.
There are educational games online that help your children learn important life values. However, it's extremely important that you research the websites you allow your children to visit beforehand. It's a good idea to sit with them as they play. Ask them questions about what they are doing and what it means. Play the games with them.
