Easy Sesame Street Preschool Activities

For over 40 years, Sesame Street has been an essential learning program for young children. Using characters created by Jim Henson, Sesame Street continues to entertain and educate children around the world. Their website has lessons and activities that can be incorporated into your educational program; there are also step-by-step instructions and videos to guide you through each lesson.
  1. Five Is Always Five

    • Download the sheet needed for this activity from the Sesame Street website. The activity involves Oscar the Grouch and Slimey the Worm. The goal is to count ladybugs, grouped by five, in the picture. There are also empty circles by each group for the child to write in. There are five groups of five ladybugs on a picnic basket and blanket. You will instruct the child to count the ladybugs in each group; they will write the number in each circle. Upon completion, you will ask her to count the numbers of groups. Lastly, she will count the total number of ladybugs in the picture. At the end of the lesson, she will have an opportunity to color the picture.

    Animal Charades

    • The supplies needed are construction paper, scissors, crayons and a paper bag. Cut the construction paper into the shapes of several animals. Give each child an animal to color and place in the bag. Choose one child to pick an animal out of the bag; instruct him to pretend to be the animal using only his body and sounds. The other children will guess which animal he is portraying. The child that guesses correctly will be next to pretend to be an animal. Incorporate this fun activity into a lesson about animals.

    Shape Detective

    • Around the house or classroom, look for different shapes to take a picture of; if a camera isn't available, these shapes can be cut out of magazines or printed from the Internet; using safety scissors, allow the child to cut around the picture, revealing only the shape. Lay out construction paper and glue a few pictures on each piece of paper. Also, place glue around each shape and sprinkle glitter to create a decorative border around each picture. Then allow the child to sign and display their collage.

    Snowflake Chandelier

    • Needed for this activity is a paper bag, a string, tissue, scissors, tape, wax paper, glitter and glue. First, shred the tissue into pieces and sprinkle them on a sheet of wax paper. Next, place another sheet of wax paper and a paper bag over the tissue pieces. Iron the paper bag for a few seconds until the wax paper is fused. Cut one large circle and several small circles. Place lines of glue and glitter on your snowflakes. After the snowflakes are dried, attach each with string and tape to form a chain of snowflakes. Hang your snowflake mobile near a window for everyone to see.
