Chose a theme for each month. The theme can be based on a particular holiday, season or lesson being covered in class. Have a monthly theme calendar that is separate from the normal classroom calendar. Prior to the start of each month, fill in each day of the month with a different craft or activity the kids can do based on the theme of the month. On the first day of the month, post the calendar and read each of the activities out loud. As the days pass, put an "X" over the date, so the children can keep track of what day it is.
Have a large dry-erase calendar hanging in the classroom where the children can reach it. Either make or buy a variety of symbols to indicate what the weather is. For example, you can draw, color and cut out small suns, clouds, raindrops and snowflakes. Then laminate them, so you can reuse them each month. On each school day, have the children decide which symbol best represents what the weather is like that day. Then one student can tape the appropriate symbol on that day of the month. As the month goes on, the children will be able to see what the weather was like over the course of the month. This will also help children identify different types of weather with different seasons.
Start with a blank calendar each month and have it hanging in the classroom. Each day, take a picture of the kids doing an activity, craft or playing a game. Minimize the picture to a thumbprint size and print it. Then glue it on the appropriate day on the blank calendar. As each month passes, leave the calendar pages hanging up on the wall. This will allow the students to look back over the school year and remember all the things they did. At the end of the school year, make enough colored copies of each calendar page for each of the kids to take home a complete school calendar scrapbook. The kids will enjoy going through the calendars with their families and pointing out all the pictures of themselves.
At the start of each month, have the students help you fill out the monthly activity calendar. For example, if you have a library story time on Wednesdays, ask the students what day they have story time. Then fill in story time on each Wednesday in the month. If you have a special music class on Fridays, ask the kids what day music is. Then fill in the music classes for the entire month. Doing this each month will help the students remember their regular schedules. It will also provide them with consistency and predictability.
