Introduce children to the concept of time by relating days to one another. Talk about what today is, including the month, day of the week and date. Then talk about what day yesterday was and what day tomorrow will be. This sequencing will help children learn the order of the days of the week. If you go through this enough, you'll be able to ask the preschoolers what day tomorrow is and what day yesterday was, then write it on your calendar board or use the appropriate stick-on cards for the days.
When going through daily calendar activities, discuss what season it is. This introduces the concept of weather. Then asks the kids what kind of weather elements you can expect in each specific season. Lastly, talk about what the weather is currently like. Have kids give their ideas and suggestions, such as windy, cold, hot, rainy, cloudy or snowy.
Mark on your calendar any upcoming holidays or special events. This is a way to teach preschoolers to track time, as well as introduce holidays they may be unaware of, such as Presidents Day. Talk about the importance of the holidays and have kids count out loud the number of days until then.
Working with a calendar is mathematical. Tracking the days involves counting. Use the calendar as a way to teach or reinforce the concept of counting. Ask kids to count the number of Fridays in month, the number of days until a special event and the number of days in a week.
