Create an age appropriate area where children can climb and jump. A toddler room should be equipped with a structure containing two steps up and a ramp, or a set of padded climbers, such as large foam pieces, where toddlers can climb and jump safely. An older classroom should have indoor slides, higher stairs or larger foam blocks for building and climbing. Jump ropes and hula hoops are also appropriate for an indoor climbing and jumping area.
Use sufficient carpeting and padding under each structure or set of foam climbing pieces. Allowing children to be physical indoors means children will fall, jump and run indoors. Carpets soften impact in the case of falls and prepare a gentle landing for jumping children, while providing a nonslip surface for runners. Padding includes preschool-specific pads made from foam or carpeting materials. Make sure all areas of physical play are supported by soft flooring. Secure the soft flooring to prevent the material from slipping during use.
Prepare a high shelf with a stereo and kid-friendly music. Place an area rug large enough to hold the whole class on the floor, securing the rug with tape or other rug securing material. Use two rugs if necessary to make sure all children have enough room to dance. Allow the children to use the rug area to move and listen to music. Play dancing games in this area, instructing children to remain on the carpeted area. Keeping children on the carpet will prevent slips from overenthusiastic dance moves. This activity is suitable for toddler children and up.
