How to Break Spoken Words Into Sounds

Leaning to read or speak a new language can be difficult. Breaking down each words into the individual sounds it comprises can help. Every spoken language can be broken down into phonemes, which are the specific mouth movements that produce sounds. By learning these phonemes, you can break down long words into basic sounds that help you learn the full word.

Instructions

    • 1

Print the word on a note card, leaving space between the letters so that the reader can focus on each letter individually before trying to piece them together.

    • 2

Break the word up into phonemes. Write each phoneme on a separate note card and place a slash mark at the beginning and end of the phoneme. For example, the word "asked" could be broken up into the phonemes /a/, /sk/ and /t/.

    • 3

Place the phoneme cards behind each word card. Fill out word cards and phoneme cards for about 20 words.

    • 4

Show a word card to someone and see if that person can say the word. If not, put the card down and help him sound each part out using the phoneme cards. Help him string the phonemes together to say the whole word.
