How to Translate Vocabulary Words Into Sentences

Creating sentences with vocabulary words help you incorporate new words into your writing and speech. Writing sentences requires a strong understanding of words and an excellent command of grammar and spelling. Decide how you want to incorporate these words to improve your vocabulary before you craft sentences. Do you want to learn a new word and use it whenever possible or do you want to reserve a new word for special occasions when you need a better vocabulary? The more you want to use and understand a word, the more specific your sentence should be.

Look up the definition of all of your vocabulary words. Write down each definition for each word. Some words have multiple definitions. Write an entry for each definition of the word. Pay attention to the word's synonyms and antonyms as well.

    • 2

Search for the word on an internet search engine. Read several examples of the appropriate use of the word.

Construct your own vocabulary sentence. Begin with a simple sentence. If your word is a noun that refers to a place, such as the word "library", you might write a sentence that says "Sally visited the library because she wanted to find books about pottery." If your word is a verb such as "sing" you might write "Sally loves to sing because she loves musical theater." Try to write more specific sentences as your understanding of the word grows. Do your best to avoid defining the word such as "the library is a place where I find books."

Read the sentences to ensure that they make sense. If possible ask a friend or teacher to read over your sentences and give you feedback.
