How to Make a Scarecrow for a Pre-Kindergartner

Making a scarecrow can be a great craft project for a pre-Kindergarten class, or even just a project for a parent and preschooler to complete together. Chances are, you have all of the materials you will need right in your own home. The scarecrow can be used in your backyard garden or as a festive decoration for fall. The best part is that your pre-Kindergartener will be able to complete most of the tasks required to complete this project on their own!

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two broomsticks in the shape of a cross and nail them together in this position. This will provide the basic shape for your scarecrow.

    • 2

Place the shirt on the scarecrow frame and be sure all buttons are secured. Crumple newspaper and stuff it into the shirt until it is full. Secure the open ends of the shirt with a length of rope.

    • 3

Cut a hole in the crotch of the pants and stuff the pants with crumpled newspaper. Place the pants on the scarecrow frame, careful to thread the broomstick end through the hole in the crotch of the pants. Secure the pants to the stick with rope. Tie the ends of the pants with rope to keep the newspaper secure.

    • 4

Decorate the pillowcase with fabric paint to resemble a scarecrow face. When the paint is dry, stuff the pillowcase with newspaper and secure it with a rope so that it resembles a head. You may place a hat on the scarecrow head if you wish. Thread the pillowcase onto the broomstick and secure it to the stick with rope.

    • 5

Place your scarecrow in your garden by pushing the end of the vertical broomstick into the ground.
