Gather red collage materials together, such as red noodles, pompoms, sequins, stickers and construction paper cut into various shapes. Offer the children glue and encourage them to make a "red" masterpiece. Use different shades of red materials if possible. String red beads onto lacing yarn to make red necklaces.
Cut apples in half and dip them in red paint or red ink. Press the apples onto white construction paper to make red apple prints. To extend the learning, bring several varieties of red apples and offer the children a taste of each one. Discuss the fact that the apples might be different shades of red, or have a different shape or flavor.
Provide red, white, yellow and blue paint, spoons and some small containers, such as baby food jars. Demonstrate how to change the shade of red by adding small amounts of white, yellow or blue paint. Allow the children to make new shades of red. Ask them to make names for the new shades of red, such as "bubble gum pink" or "race car red." Offer white construction paper and paint brushes to make red paintings.
Make a batch of homemade play dough and add one packet of powdered red fruit drink, along with red food coloring. The fruit drink mix adds color, acts as a preservative and gives the play dough a pleasant, fruity scent. Allow the children to roll the play dough out and make sculptures with it.
