After you read the book, go around the circle and ask each student to finish the following sentence: "I'm as ____ as a ____." Write down each student's sentence on a piece of paper. Give each student a piece of paper and have him draw a picture that corresponds with his sentence. Gather all the pages into a book. The book can even be placed in the book area.
Take a full-length picture of each of the students in your class. Laminate the pictures and then cut each picture into three pieces: a head, a body and feet. Make a flip-style book with the pictures using rings. The children will be able to mix-and-match the various body parts of their classmates.
Have the students draw a picture of any creature they would want to become. Ask them to describe their creatures and write on their papers what the creature is and why the student would want to become that creature. Then take head shots of the students and paste it onto their creature's head. Post the pictures around the classroom.
Make a chameleon out of transparency or laminate sheet. Staple it to a craft stick. Discuss with the children that chameleons change colors depending on what they are near. Have them take the clear chameleon and place it on top of various different color backgrounds, such as the wall or their clothes, so they can see how chameleons change colors.
