How to Make a Board Game to Help Preschoolers Learn Colors

Being able to identify colors is a typical preschool activity. Preschool students usually enjoy games, so creating a game board that helps them identify colors will keep them engaged as they work on their color skills. The game will also help them learn how to work together, and can be modified to fit a variety of preschool settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a white or colored poster board.

    • 2

Draw a path on the poster board that has a beginning and an end. For instance, at the bottom left of the board, you can write, "Start," and at the top right, write, "Finish." If you would like, draw pictures near start and finish, such as a finish line near the finishing spot on the board.

    • 3

Divide the path into several dozen squares, alternating six different colors. You can use markers, crayons or colored pencils.

    • 4

Find two die. One die can stay a number dice, but the other dice will act as the color dice. Purchase sticker dots of colors that correspond to the colored squares on your board. Put one color on each of the six sides of the dice and cut off the excess sticker so that the sticker covers the square sides of the die.

    • 5

Use coins or a favorite rock or stone as the pawns that students will move around the board.

    • 6

Roll the die. Children can move their pawns the amount of colored spaces that they rolled. For instance, if they rolled a green two, they can move the pawns up two green spaces on the board. Or, children can compete with other and take turns moving to see who finishes first.
