Doctor Craft for Preschoolers

Doctors can both fascinate and frighten preschoolers. Doctors help and heal, but in doing so, they also may cause hurt. Preschoolers may understand this on one level. However, talking about doctors and what they do offers preschoolers a chance to voice their concerns. Interactive crafts give children a positive view of doctors and their equipment that may keep them from dreading the next office visit.
  1. Fake Doctor Bags

    • Help the preschoolers make their own doctor bags. For one bag, start with two pieces of black construction paper laid out side by side on the long side. Using clear packing tape, tape the two pieces of paper together on the touching sides. Fold the paper together to create the front and back of the doctor bag. Cut out a large red cross and glue it to one side. Cut two 8-inch strips from black construction paper and staple them to each top side for handles. Add the child’s name in white crayon. Make a simple doctor bag with a sealed large manila envelope. Use crayons, markers or paint to make the sides black. Add a red cross to one side. Slit one long side for the opening. Glue on an 8-inch strip from construction paper for a handle.

    Usable Doctor Bags

    • For a usable doctor bag, start with an inexpensive plastic box with a handle. Cut out two red crosses and glue one on each side of the box to create a doctor bag appearance. For another variation of a usable doctor bag craft, start with a cereal box. Tape the box closed. Cover it with black paper or spray paint it black. On one of the large, flat sides, cut around three of the sides to create a flap. This gains access to the inside of the bag. Use self-adhesive strips to create a buckle so the bag can be opened and closed. Cut a 3-inch-wide-by-8-inch-long strip of black cardboard. Staple each of the ends to the appropriate place on the doctor bag to create a handle.

    First Aid Kits

    • Put together first aid kits, explaining the uses of the different items. Place everything in a doctor bag the preschoolers make or in a tissue box they decorate. Craft sticks become tongue depressors. Add gauze and bandages. Let them color and cut out of cardstock a stethoscope, a pill bottle, a thermometer and a flashlight. In turn, let the preschoolers pretend to have pain and illnesses so the others can use their equipment to help.

    Decorate a Picture

    • Download or copy a picture of a doctor examining a child. Let the children color the picture with crayons. Let the preschoolers use different colors of yarn, glued around the picture edges to make a frame. Instead of using yarn, create a frame by varying the colors around the edges to make a stained-glass-looking frame. Soak cotton balls in baby oil and let the preschoolers rub the baby oil all over their pictures. Place the pictures between layered paper towels to soak up the excess oil. Punch a series of holes across the top of the picture. Weave ribbon through the holes with enough left to tie the ends together so the picture can be hung in a window where light creates a stained glass appearance. For a third variation of the picture craft, cut out the face of the child from the picture and have each preschooler glue a personal picture to the back of the hole to put themselves in the picture.
