Dinosaur Craft Activities for Pre-K

Dinosaurs are fascinating creatures that interest people of all ages. Young children especially love to learn about and play with dinosaurs, creating their version of dinosaurs' lives with their vivid imaginations. One of the biggest challenges of teaching preschoolers is trying to hold their attention long enough to get a point across. A great way to gain and keep their interest is to help them create dinosaur crafts.
  1. Dinosaur Masks

    • Create a dinosaur mask using a large paper bag. Cut around the bottom of the bag, about a third of the way up from the bottom of the bag. Place the bag on the child's head and trace holes for the eyes and jagged mouth, then remove the bag and help the child cut the holes out. Decorate the bag with crayons, adding colorful dinosaur features like spots. Take the piece of the bag that you cut out off and cut it at one corner to make a tail. Help the preschooler cut triangles out of construction paper and glue or staple them to the tail. Staple the tail to the back of the bag, and the child is transformed into a dinosaur.

    Dinosaur Egg

    • Buy Styrofoam eggs from a craft or hobby store. Cut the bottom of the egg off using a serrated knife so that the egg sits flat, then place the egg on a plate or paper towels in front of the preschooler. Provide bowls of washable paint and paint brushes and have each child create his own unique dinosaur egg. Anything goes with this craft; it encourages creativity and provides an opportunity to talk to the kids about dinosaur eggs and dinosaur babies.

    Dinosaur Hat

    • Print coloring pages of dinosaurs, and ask the preschoolers to color the pictures using crayons or markers. Cut the dinosaur pictures out and glue them to strips of construction paper large enough to fit around the child's head. Wrap the construction paper strip around the child's head and staple the ends together at the appropriate location. March the children around the room in a line and call it a dinosaur parade.

    Dinosaur Tooth Necklace

    • Show the preschoolers how to mold pieces of homemade playdough into small dinosaur teeth. Ask the children to make about five dinosaur teeth each. Poke a hole in the top of each tooth big enough for yarn to fit through. Set the teeth aside and let them dry overnight so that they are completely dry and hardened. After the teeth are dry, string each tooth onto a piece of yarn. Tie the ends of the yarn together, and the dinosaur tooth necklace is ready to wear.
