Get-Acquainted Activities for Pre-K

For some preschoolers, it can be overwhelming to enter a classroom for the first time. All of the unfamiliar faces can be intimidating. Teachers can help make the transition easier by planning get to know you activities and games that help students learn names and faces. The activities can help students make friends and get excited about going to school.
  1. Bean Bag Toss

    • Use a small bean bag to toss around for this game. Have students stand in a circle. Then, toss the ball to one child. Make sure they are ready for it before you toss. The child says his or her name and the class responds "Hi! (child's name)". Now, the child can toss the ball to another student in the circle. Continue until every child has had a turn.

    Class Picnic

    • Invite students to bring their favorite treat to class. A few students can serve their favorite snack to the class a couple of days a week. Have the child share what they brought before it is served. Ask them if they know what is in the recipe or if they helped to make it. Kids will enjoy sharing their favorite treat with the class.

    Display Artwork

    • Preschoolers love to draw and color. Ask the class to draw a picture of their family and present it to their class. Some children may be shy and asking them about their family will help them be more comfortable with speaking in front of the class. Display the artwork around the room.

    Show and Tell

    • Show and tell is a classic way to help students get to know each other. A few students each day can bring in a favorite pet, toy or other item they choose to share with the class. The child must say their name and describe the item. Try asking them a few questions about the item if they are not too shy. Do not force kids to talk longer than they want. As long as they share their name, let them know they did a great job.

    Sing-A-Long

    • Simple and repetitive songs are easy for preschoolers to learn. Teach them a song that will help them learn everyone's name. Start the song. Then, point at a student and have them say their name. Sing the song at the beginning of the day. Sing this song to the tune of "Did You Ever See a Lassie":

      Here we are together,

      Together, together,

      Here we are together,

      Back at school again.

      There's (student's name),

      and (student's name), and

      (student's name).

      Here we are together,

      Back at school again.
