Activities for Age 4 Preschoolers

By the time that children are 4 years-old and in preschool, they are beginning the transformation to becoming a kindergarten student. They are preparing for full-time school and need to have an understanding of certain topics. Beginning kindergarten in the next school year, 4-year-olds should have a grasp on colors, alphabet and numbers. There are many different activities that preschool teachers can do with students to help them be prepared for the transition.
  1. Colors

    • Give students a piece of construction paper for every color in the rainbow plus black and white. Have them think of different objects that are those colors. This can be done in a whole class brinstorming session. Some ideas to consider are purple grapes, red strawberries and yellow bananas. Students can then use crayons to draw the different objects on the corresponding colored paper and create a booklet that the teacher can staple or tie together with a piece of string.

    Numbers

    • This activity will help students recognize numbers from one to ten. Make decks of cards using note cards. Write the numbers one through ten, one on each card, four times each to make one deck. Divide the children into groups of four and give each group one deck of cards. The students will pass four cards out to each and place the rest in the center of the table. If they have any pairs of cards, they will place them face up on the table. When it is their turn, they will choose another member of the group and ask if they have a card to match one that is in their hand. If they student has the card they will give it to them, creating a pair. If they do not, the child will pick a card from the center of the table and another child will take their turn. The game will continue until all of the cards are gone. A winner is determined by counting the number of pairs that each student has.

    Letters

    • Help students will letter sound recognition by organizing a classroom scavenger hunt. If you want to use the entire alphabet, this activity my require periods of time over several days. Make letter booklets with each letter of the alphabet having it's own page and pass them out to the students. You want each letter to have it's own page so that the children can draw the objects that they find. If the booklets are too bulky, you can have two letters to each page and use the front and back. Students will go around the room and find items that start with each letter and then draw a picture. Examples of items include Calendar for C, Desk for D and Window for W.

    Safety

    • Safety is a big part of children getting older and many may attend a safety meeting prior to entering kindergarten. Age 4 preschool teachers can use this safety as a topic for fun activities. Check with school administration to see if it is possible to have different community workers come into the classroom. If this is okay, check with the local police station, fire fighters and lifeguards to set up times for them to come in an speak with the children. They can talk about what to do in an emergency and discuss safety practices during an event. Speak with the children about other topics of safety like bicycle safety and water safety. Students can make a list of phone numbers to use in an emergency that includes the police, fire station, 911, grandparents and neighbors. For fire safety, have the students plan an escape route with their parents in the event of a fire.
