Teach your preschool students about Australia, where kangaroos live. Show students how to find Australia on a globe or map. Use the Internet to find the current temperature in Australia, and compare it with the current temperature in your location. Watch videos and look at pictures showing the different landscapes of Australia, which include rain forests and deserts.
Get students out of their seats with physical activity inspired by the kangaroo. Show students videos of how the kangaroos use their long, powerful legs to hop. Encourage students to hop like kangaroos. Line students up on one end of the room or playground, and see who can hop to the other side the fastest. Count how many hops it takes to move along the hallway.
Teach students how kangaroos keep their babies in a pouch on their stomachs. Read the book "Katy No-Pocket," by Emmy Payne. In the story, Katy No-Pocket does not have a pouch to hold her joey, or baby kangaroo, but gets an apron with many pockets to hold her baby. Bring in an apron with pockets and a small, stuffed kangaroo. Invite students to take turns wearing the apron and carrying the baby kangaroo. Encourage them to hop like a kangaroo while wearing the apron.
Teach students about the letter "K" during your unit on kangaroos, suggests Preschool Rock. Hide items that begin with the letter "K" throughout the classroom, and let students go on a scavenger hunt to find them. Provide paper, crayons and markers for students to practice writing the letter "K," and drawing kangaroos and other things that begin with that letter.
