Gummy Bear Activities for Pre-K

One way to engage preschool or pre-kindergarten (pre-K) children in the classroom involves combining food with a learning activity. Enter Gummy Bears. These lovable little creatures come in an assortment of colors and flavors and are also a fat-free snack. After planning a Gummy Bear activity, provide the students with fresh Gummy Bears to eat as a reward.
  1. Color

    • As of 2011, Gummy Bears are produced in five different colors: white, green, yellow, orange and red. Teach pre-K students how to identify different colors by giving each student one Gummy Bear of each color and then asking all the children to say the color of their bears aloud. If a student needs help, prompt him with potential options. For another activity, give students a small bagful of Gummy Bears, then instruct them to separate the bears based on color into five distinct groups.

    Counting

    • Teach basic counting skills using Gummy Bears. Give each preschool student a different number of Gummy Bears, and ask them to count how many they've received. For a class activity, count how many Gummy Bears are in the entire classroom. Start with one student, and ask her to count hers aloud and then move to the next and the next until all of the Gummy Bears have been counted. As numbers become high, you may need to prompt the students with the next set of numbers. However, this exercise will likely students to count higher than they have before.

    Gummy Bear Family

    • Provide each student with a piece of paper and crayons, and ask them to draw a house. You can demonstrate the basic structure of a house on the white or chalkboard. Next, provide the students with Gummy Bears and paste. Help them paste the Gummy Bears onto the picture and make a Gummy Bear family made up of parents, brothers and sisters to their desire. The children can paste the Gummy Bears inside or outside the house. Students may even depict the Gummy Bears doing activities. Finally, ask the preschool students to then describe each member of the family. Using their imagination, they can come up with names and hobbies each member of the family enjoys.

    Gummy Bear Hunt

    • In this physical activity, the preschool students have the reward of eating the Gummy Bears at the end of the fun. Hide small bags of Gummy Bears throughout the room, then write a clue on the chalkboard for each location where you have hidden Gummy Bears. Have your students use the clues to guess the locations. Whoever guesses correctly gets to find and eat the Gummy Bears from that location. Provide extra Gummy Bears so everyone gets a treat at the end of the activity.
