Learning Time Crafts for Preschoolers

Preschool marks a critical point in the development of a child, and it's a time when the child begins to pick up on some very basic principles, including how to tell time. Because they are so young, it's better to show preschoolers visually how to tell time, and one good way to do that is through a selection of easy and colorful craft projects.
  1. Clock Crafts

    • Create a basic clock with movable hands and use that as a jumping-off point for a number of crafts. Draw a clock or print out a clock template and glue it on a piece of construction paper, then attach the clock's hands to the center with a brass paper fastener punched through the middle. Have the children decorate the clock by cutting out pictures of animals and gluing them around the numbers of the clock. You could also create plain clocks and let the children color them with crayons. You can use finished clocks to show the kids how minutes and hours work by moving the hands on the clock.

    Calendar Crafts

    • Use calendar crafts to help educate kids about months, weeks and days. For example, you could print out a blank month template for all 12 months and one title page for the calendar, then divide the children into groups. Divide up the pages and assign the groups with decorating the back of each page -- except December -- with markers, crayons and stickers. When they're finished, bind the pages together to form a calendar and hang it up on your classroom wall.

    Seasonal Crafts

    • Engage the children in craft projects that highlight the four seasons. For example, you could provide children with a piece of paper divided in four panels that depict the same blank scene, such as a hillside with a tree on it, then instruct the preschoolers to draw on each panel with watercolors or crayons as it would appear during that particular season (e.g., draw green leaves on the tree for the summer panel or a picture of a child sledding down the hill for the winter panel). Or, focus on a different season each week by having them create a paper snowman one week and a tulip craft the next.

    Crafts and Games

    • Work in some games with your time crafts. For example, help the children create a basic clock and platform for it, then make a small mouse out of cardboard. Assist them in making the basic shapes and then allow them to decorate as they please. Display all of the children's crafts and then start a "Hickory Dickory Dock" sing-along with the class, adjusting the clocks to the right time when you reach the part of the rhyme that goes "The clock struck (time)." You could also have seasonal games, such as decorating eggs in the spring and having an egg hunt.
