How to Make a Math Collage for Preschoolers

Utilize a preschooler's quest for exploring the world to make a math collage. According to Tina Cho of Education.com, sorting and ordering simple objects into a collage teaches young children real math concepts. One way to craft a math collage is with a nature walk at a local park, in your school's recess area or in your own backyard. Collect as many leaves as you can and gather them into a bag to take inside to construct the educational collage.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the found leaves onto your table. Discuss with your preschooler all the different characteristics the leaves have. Ask him what similarities they share and what differences.

    • 2

Instruct your preschooler to sort the leaves into piles that are small, medium and large. Count how many points, sides or veins are found on each leaf.

    • 3

Instruct the young child to place all the leaves into a line with the smallest to the left and the biggest to the right. Younger children need some guidance.

    • 4

Squeeze glue underneath the smallest leaf. Press the glue side down onto one side of the 12-by-18-inch construction paper. Add glue to the next leaf in the arrangement. Press it onto the paper.

    • 5

Squeeze glue onto the rest of the leaves and place them in the right order, from smallest to largest, onto the construction paper. Help the preschooler write his name and allow the craft to dry completely.
