How to Decorate the Infant Room in a Day Care With a 'What Do You Smell?' Theme

The infant room at a daycare can sometimes be filled with various smells, from baby power, diapers and food. Early on an infant will start recognizing different smells, such as her parents and food, and a room themed around “What do you smell?” can add visual association with items that smell. Since infants have limited vision, find and paint objects that are large and close to where the infants will be lying and playing.

Instructions

    • 1

Select which wall in the room will be the main wall, where infants will play around and circle time will be held. Paint a large oak tree on the wall covering most of the area and paint part of the tree's top on the ceiling.

    • 2

Paint different fruits on the tree branches, falling off the tree and on the ground around the tree trunk. Fruits to paint can include strawberries, apples, grapes, pineapples and raspberries.

    • 3

Place baskets of stuffed, baby-safe fruits and veggies toys around the bottom of the oak tree for infants to hold and play with.

    • 4

Set a round, or half-circle, area rug underneath the tree to have circle time on with the infants. The rug should have designs of various fruits, veggies or other things that give off a smell.

    • 5

Select another section of the wall to paint a flower garden. Draw a white picket fence along the bottom of the wall and have flowers growing out of the ground behind it.

    • 6

Place a rug along the garden for crawling babies to scoot along and look at the flowers.

    • 7

Decorate the baby changing area with a “bad smell” theme and paint the wall with kids and animals holding their noses and waving away the bad smell.
