How to Convert Decibels to Bels

Decibels, abbreviated dB, and bels, abbreviated B, are logarithmic measures of sound volume. Each time the sound increases by one bel, the sound is ten times louder. The prefix "deci-" means 10^-1, or 0.1, meaning it takes 10 dB to equal 1 B. You might need to convert from decibels to bels if you have multiple volume measurements that you want to compare.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the number of decibels by 10 to convert to bels. For example, if you have 34 decibels, divide 34 by 10 to get 3.4 B.

    • 2

Multiply the number of decibels by 0.1 to convert to bels. In this example, check your answer by multiplying 34 dB by 0.1 to get 3.4 B.
