Flash cards can be used as a tool to create math vocabulary words and definitions. You can use 4 by 6 blank index cards and write the vocabulary word on one side and the definition on the other side. Then you will call out the definition to the student and she will guess the correct vocabulary word for that particular definition.
You can create bingo clue cards with numbers. You then read the clues aloud to students and they attempt to respond with the right vocabulary word. Each clue card will have a description of a number that has specific mathematical terminology. Students will identify the number on their card that is related to the vocabulary. Students create a mental picture of the meaning to identify the correct number on their bingo card. When the student identifies the correct number that relates to the vocabulary, the teacher will ask the student to explain aloud her strategy for coming up with the answer.
You can have one student act as a game show host and split the remaining students into two teams. Create four boxes on the board with one vocabulary word inside each box. Then have the game host write out one definition or an antonym or synonym. One member of a team will then be instructed to blow a whistle when the team has the answer. The team that blows the whistle first will shout out the answer. If the answer is correct, the team will receive game points. The team with the most points wins the game.
You can visit the computer lab for students to brush up on their math terminology through online flash games. Students will learn their vocabulary words and have fun at the same time. They can play online word search, vocabulary match games and math vocabulary versions. Some websites that offer these games include LearningGamesforKids.Com and EduPlace.Com.
