Mathematics games involving dice are common, which you can use within small groups in the classroom. Students can practice adding, subtracting or multiplying the numbers thrown on the dice. To add a competitive element, a teacher can role some giant dice at the front and students have to shout out the answer.
Play a simple card game with small groups of students to practice arithmetic skills. One of the students has to write down a number between one and 100 and puts it in the center of the group. Deal each student five cards. The students then take turns to try and use a combination of the five cards to equate the number in the center. Kings, queens, aces and jacks are equal to 10. All other cards have the value of their number, for example, a six of hearts has the value of six.
Use a number of online games to learn about decimal numbers. An example is decimal switch (See Resources) which allows a student to put numbers in order by clicking on them.
Teachers can use a set of small cakes to teach students about fractions, by cutting cakes into halves, quarters and thirds. By putting various pieces together, the student learns how fractions add up.
