How to Run a Mock Election in Middle School

A mock election is simply a pretend election. Middle schools often host mock elections to teach students about the election process in the United States. Sometimes, mock elections are held alongside real elections, and students "vote" for real candidates. But mock elections sometimes feature student candidates, and this method allows schools to practice the pre-election process as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Have students to register to vote. To register, students must complete a form providing their personal information and selecting a political party affiliation. Limit political parties to two or three, for the sake of practice.

    • 2

Invite interested students to seek party nominations by announcing their intent to run and sharing their ideas and beliefs with other students. Have each student political party nominate a candidate to represent them. Encourage students to vote for the candidate who will best represent the party's interests.

    • 3

Instruct nominated candidates to organize campaigns. Advise them to appoint campaign advisers, communications aides and canvassers. Have campaign advisers help the candidate strategize and prepare for speeches, have communications aides draft campaign literature and have canvassers create and distribute signs and stickers.

    • 4

Allow nominated candidates time (a week or two) to campaign. During this time, allow candidates to make speeches and host a debate. At the debate, have candidates respond to student-submitted questions. Ask a student who is not involved in any campaign to moderate.

    • 5

Appoint a group of trusted students to serve as poll workers and tally the votes after the students have voted for a candidate in homeroom. Poll workers should represent the diverse student body, both male and female students from each grade level.

    • 6

Announce the winner. Invite the winning candidate to give an acceptance speech and the losing candidate to give a concession speech.
