How to Win an Elementary School Election

Elementary school students vote in elections for various positions. Every student elected represents his school and the students who attend it. Student councils assist parent groups and the principal in making changes to help teachers, students and parents. It can be difficult for a student to win the position he seeks, but certain steps can improve a student's chances of winning.

Decide which office your child wishes to run for. Research the qualifications and make your choice based on his strengths. For example, if he is a strong writer, encourage him to seek a secretarial position. If he is a good speaker, he might want to run for president.

    • 2

Have your child speak to fellow students in the hall and in his classes, asking them their thoughts on school procedures and rules. Make a list of these thoughts and use them to develop ideas for bettering the school.

    • 3

Make fliers promoting your child's candidacy. Use a computer to create signs to post at the school. Put a photograph of your child on his flier so that other students can identify him when they see him around school. Develop a catchy campaign slogan that highlights a change he wishes to make if elected. Make numerous copies of the fliers and take them to the school office for approval. Help your child post them in hallways and on classroom doors.

    • 4

Help your child write a letter asking teachers' permission to visit their classrooms for an introduction. The letter should state the amount of time your child wishes to use for this short speech. After approval, he should visit the classrooms, introduce himself and tell the students he is running for a student council office.

Prepare a speech for election day. Use note cards to write down key points he needs to remember to include in his speech. These should include changes he intends to help make if elected. Your child should thank students in advance for their votes and support. The speech should be short but informative. It can be enhanced by including music to help it stand out from those of other students.
