Decide what responsibilities a student council will have. This could include setting up special events to enhance school spirit, providing ideas about school policies, fund-raising or giving the students a voice at the administrative level.
Determine the composition of the student council. It could be representative by having one or two students from each grade or class, or it could be open to anyone. Some student councils elect the executive positions themselves, while in other schools the specific positions are elected directly by the students. You might choose to allow only people from certain grades to hold the highest leadership positions.
Create an election procedure. This should include who is allowed to run and how they apply. Grades, behavior, permission of parents or school staff, age, grade level are all possible items for consideration. Your election procedure should also take into account campaigning, including posters and speeches. You also need to determine how and when votes will be cast.
Decide to run for student council only after weighing all the factors. Make sure your parents support your decision. Ensure that you can take on the additional responsibilities without it affecting your grades or participation in sports or extra-curricular activities.
Develop a campaign platform. Determine which issues are important to you. Remember, don't promise to do things that you have no control over such as eliminating homework.
Create posters and flyers for your campaign. Make sure to follow the rules your school sets about where to place posters and whether permission is needed. Your name and the position you are seeking should be highly visible. Use bright colors to attract attention.
Talk to as many students as possible. Find out what their concerns are. Tell them about your platform. Ask for their support.
Write a short speech that outlines your campaign. Make sure to repeat your name within the speech a few times. Tell the students who you are, why you are running and what you will do if elected. If possible, use humor but don't try to be the class clown -- elections are serious.
