How to Motivate a Student to Work Hard in School

Standing at the front of the class, you are pumped up and motivated to introduce new content, but the students' stares of boredom and lack of motivation today threatens to burst your bubble. No need to let that happen. Rather than joining the students in their state of gloom, invite them to relish the joy of learning by implementing some motivational strategies at the first sign of trouble. Better yet, design instruction to be motivating all the time. Effective teachers know how to make learning fun -- every day.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach with passion, displaying positive and energetic demeanor. Showing students that you value the content you are teaching helps them see the importance. Explain why the content is so important and how it applies to life. Give examples when possible and tell stories that demonstrate real-life application of the material being taught.

    • 2

Engage students in the learning process. Ask students to set goals for themselves. Establish a sense of control for students by involving them in the decision-making process and valuing their opinion. Practice effective communication and regularly ask students for feedback. Provide students with frequent objectives and specific feedback that can help them improve academically.

    • 3

Organize the course. Set high expectations that are reasonable. Communicate the expectations and objectives for your classroom and for each assignment. Set students up for success. Break down big lessons into smaller chunks and recognize students as they accomplish each individual piece of the greater whole.

    • 4

Tell students how much you care about them and their learning. Show students that others care. Involve parents and the community and show how they value education. Invite guest speakers, broadcast speeches and share celebrity news that supports education.

    • 5

Give students rewards, compliments, incentives and special privileges for meeting their goals. Engage students in friendly competition where everyone has the opportunity to win. Or better yet, have students compete with their past performances. Keep student performance records and encourage students to continually improve, and recognize them for improvement.
