How to Work Hard in School to Enter College

Preparing for college is not simply filling out a college application at the beginning of your senior year of high school and hoping you get accepted. You must start working hard toward entering college long before your senior year. Even if it is too early for your grades to count toward college, such as in elementary school or middle school, certain classes set the foundation for high school and college. Planning ahead can help you get into the college you want to achieve your goals in life.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the schools and programs you hope to enter when you go to college. Each school and program has its own entrance requirements. Plan to take the required classes to get into a particular school or program so you are properly prepared.

    • 2

Plan your class schedule throughout your high school years to reflect your abilities. Avoid choosing classes that are too easy for you simply to get good grades. Many colleges recognize this tactic and frown upon it. Instead, choose challenging classes and work hard to pass. A passing grade in a challenging class is worth more than a perfect score in an easy class.

    • 3

Join after school activities and school committees to build up a solid college application. Colleges like to see students participate in other activities besides academics. However, be careful not to overwhelm yourself so your grades suffer.

    • 4

Study for college preparation exams, such as the SAT and the ACT. To get into college, you will likely only need to complete one of the two. Check with your desired colleges to see which one they prefer.

    • 5

Attend all of your classes unless you are ill or have other valid reasons. Avoid skipping class because you don't want to go or you would rather do something with your friends. Some colleges look at your attendance records to determine admission.

    • 6

Create an assignment calendar so you can keep track of your homework, especially papers that require more time to complete. Turning all of your assignments in on time maximizes your grades.

    • 7

Build relationships with your teachers and other mentors who can write solid reference letters for college. Show these teachers and mentors that you are worthy of a recommendation based on your class work and outside activities.

    • 8

Focus on keeping yourself less stressed. Give yourself time to forget about your schoolwork and enjoy being a teen. Weekends, school breaks and summers provide ample opportunities to balance relaxation and learning.
