How to Get Into Art College

Art colleges offer the opportunity for students to pursue their goal of a serious career in the arts. From glass blowing to graphic design, art schools allow students to develop their skills not only in their usual media but also fields they may not have had the chance to attempt before, all while surrounded by like-minded peers. One of the most important steps to being accepted to art college is putting together a portfolio. Similarly, it is necessary to find a school receptive to your particular artistic interests.

      Locate colleges that you wish to apply. Art colleges specialize in different media, which some focusing on classical arts (such as sculpture and painting) and others on more modern arts (such as graphic design or pop art). Have a number of schools in mind before you begin applying.

      Make a portfolio. The amount of pieces vary by school but for the most part schools want to see 15-20 examples of work. Use only your best, most original work. If the school has a certain media they feature, make sure to highlight such work in your portfolio. Some schools will ask for specific things in a portfolio, so be sure to review the school's requirements.

      Choose only your absolute best work for the portfolio. This can't be stressed enough. If submitting slides or photographs make sure that they are of the highest possible quality. Follow all slide or picture requirements exactly as stated by the school. If uncertain about requirements, contact the school and verify.

      Choose thoughtfully for your letters of recommendation. Find people who are familiar with your artistic interest and growth. These shouldn't be family members. Art teachers or others who can speak to your potential should be contacted to write a letter of recommendation. A good recommendation can be the difference between landing an interview and being dismissed.

      Apply to the school. All colleges, even art schools, require an application to be considered for admittance. Be sure to fulfill all the requirements for application, including any standardized tests (SAT or ACT, among others), personal essay and other materials. Often these basic requirements are more about demonstrating ability to follow direction and procedure than anything else.

      Interview and show your work to the school. It is always best to have the original artwork than slides. For high school students, interviews for the following school year are typically scheduled between October and January.

      Occasionally a number of schools will have events where prospective students can speak with representatives and show their portfolios before applying. These events offer a perfect chance to receive feedback on the work contained in the portfolio before formally submitting it.

      Interview well. Show up on time and present yourself professionally. Be prepared for standard interview questions (such as what are your goals and why you wish to attend their school) as well as criticism of your work. It is important to understand that a great interview doesn't necessary guarantee you admission. Present yourself and your work in a way that represents both correctly.
