How to Motivate a Student Who Will Not Work

Motivating the unmotivated student is almost always a trial and error effort. There are no paramount methods for getting a student engaged in the material, but certain lesson plans and techniques will help promote productivity and participation. Observe the effects of your various motivational approaches, and tweak the coursework accordingly to find what works best for you and the individual student's needs. The best plan of action for both teachers and parents is to never give up trying.

Instructions

    • 1

Be enthusiastic about the student's accomplishments and reward successes openly. Positive reinforcement is a great motivator. Parents should be supportive and interested in their child's school work. Teachers must express a genuine interest in each student's achievements.

    • 2

Communicate and build a relationship with the student. Share your expectations and help the student set goals. Give constant and comprehensive feedback, including negative feedback, but refrain from using comments that may come across as demeaning and humiliating.

    • 3

Provide an open atmosphere for collaborative and cooperative learning. Get the student to actively participate by asking questions and arranging group work sessions. Stress the importance of being a member of the classroom community. Try to avoid competition between students.

    • 4

Use a variety of teaching methods to keep the student engaged. Implement multimedia and visual learning techniques. Set realistic goals and gradually increase the difficulty of assignments throughout the school year.

    • 5

Help the student find value in the coursework by connecting the material to his interests. Keep learning fun and productive by emphasizing personal growth instead of grades.
