How to Convert an Ounce to a Grain

The grain is an old English weight that was originally defined as the weight of a barleycorn. Two types of ounces exist: the avoirdupois ounce, abbreviated oz. or oz. av., and the troy ounce, abbreviated toz. or oz. ap. Since all these units measure weight, you can convert directly between the different units. In order to do so, you need to know whether you are converting from troy ounces or avoirdupois ounces.
